چکیده

A vibrotactile display for use in navigation has been designed and evaluated. The arm and the torso, which offer relatively large and flat surface areas, were chosen as locations for the displays. The ability of subjects to identify patterns of vibrotactile stimulation on the arm and torso was tested in a series of experiments using the vibrotactile displays. A variety of patterns of stimulation was evaluated to determine which was most effective, and the efficacy of two types of motors (pancake and cylindrical) was compared. The arm display was tested with sedentary subjects in the laboratory, and the torso display was tested both in the laboratory with sedentary subjects and outdoors with active subjects. The results indicated that identification of the vibrotactile patterns was superior on the torso as compared to the forearm, with subjects achieving 99-100% accuracy with seven of the eight patterns presented. The torso display was equally effective for both sedentary and active subjects. Thesis supervisor: Lynette A. Jones Title: Principal Research Scientist

Two-way Communication through an Oral-based Tactile Interface: Preliminary Results

A two-way tactile communication system incorporating oral-based tactile modes is developed. The prototype system allows the user to both receive navigation cues, via a microfabricated flexible electrotactile palate display, and transmit information to the outside environment using a tongue operated device (TOD). The palate display consists of a flexible electrocutaneous-mode 7x7 electrode array...

Tactile Wayfinder: Comparison of Tactile Waypoint Navigation with Commercial Pedestrian Navigation Systems

In this paper we report on a field study comparing a commercial pedestrian navigation system to a tactile navigation system called Tactile Wayfinder. Similar to previous approaches the Tactile Wayfinder uses a tactile torso display to present the directions of a route’s waypoints to the user. It advances those approaches by conveying the location of the next two waypoints rather than the next o...

Multimodal Threat Cueing in Simulated Combat Vehicle with Tactile Information Switching between Threat and Waypoint Indication

We investigated four display configurations for threat cueing in a simulated combat vehicle. The display configurations were a tactile belt only; the tactile belt combined with 3D audio; two visual displays combined with 3D audio; and a multimodal configuration (the visual displays, the tactile belt and 3D audio combined). The tactile display was also used for navigation information. The partic...

Adaptive Fusion of Inertial Navigation System and Tracking Radar Data

Against the range-dependent accuracy of the tracking radar measurements including range, elevation and bearing angles, a new hybrid adaptive Kalman filter is proposed to enhance the performance of the radar aided strapdown inertial navigation system (INS/Radar). This filter involves the concept of residual-based adaptive estimation and adaptive fading Kalman filter and tunes dynamically the fil...
